In CV, OFWs assisted in going home reach 76k; many benefit from AKAP

Cebu City, Philippines. The number of returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who had been assisted in going to their respective provinces in Central Visayas has reached over 70,000, the latest DOLE-OWWA joint data show.

As of 31 March 2021, the two agencies assisted the repatriation of 12,491 migrant workers in the Region with the month of March registering the highest number of repatriates assisted at 6,659. February had 3,850 repatriates assisted and the month of January with 1,982.

According to DOLE-7 Regional Director Salome O. Siaton, the volume of OFWs repatriated in Central Visayas significantly increased prompting the DOLE Regional and its Field Offices assign additional personnel to augment the team of OWWA that extended assistance to the OFWs arriving at the airports and at the different seaports in Region-7.

The 2020 data show that as of 31 December 2020, there was a total of 64,031 OFWs repatriated and sent home to their different provinces. 4,049 of them arrived in Bohol and about 959 arrived in the provinces of Negros Oriental and Siquijor.

Since last year when the repatriation program started up until March 2021, the total number of OFWs assisted and sent home in the Region was capped at 76,522, added Director Siaton.

Repatriates were provided with temporary accommodation and food and other assistance while awaiting the Covid test results. They were also provided with transportation for their return to their respective provinces in coordination with the local government units (LGUs).

Covid-affected OFWs benefited not only from the government’s repatriation program but also from the DOLE’s one-time cash assistance of Php10,000.00 under the DOLE-AKAP.

Under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act or Bayanihan 2, there were 4,000 OFWs in Central Visayas, who benefited from the program with the Department shelling out of Php40,000,000.00 in 2020.

For the year, around 2,811 OFWs, who benefited from AKAP with the financial assistance extended to them amounting to Php28,110,000.00.

As of 19 April 2021 since the implementation of the program last year, the total funds disbursed under DOLE-AKAP is pegged at Php68,110,000.00 benefiting a total of 6,811 OFWs.

The financial assistance was extended both to land-based and sea-based Covid-affected OFWs.
